Castelo do Piauí, Municipality in Piauí, Brazil
Castelo do Piauí is a municipality in the state of Piauí, in northeastern Brazil, made up of a small urban center and a largely rural surrounding area. The town itself holds the local government offices, a few commercial streets, and basic services, while the countryside around it is open and mostly flat.
The area was recognized as a separate municipality during the 20th century, having previously been part of a larger administrative unit in Piauí. Its separation came as the local population grew and the need for closer governance increased.
The residents, known as Castelenses, gather regularly in the town square for local celebrations and religious festivals that mark the year. These moments are the main occasions when the community comes together in a visible and lively way.
The town center is compact and easy to get around on foot, with most services and offices close to the main square. Roads leading into the rural areas can become difficult to use during the rainy season, so visiting in the dry months makes getting around much easier.
The name of the town comes from a rocky formation in the area that resembles a castle rising above the flat land around it. Visitors who look toward the horizon outside the town can spot this natural rock shape that gave the place its name.
