The Serra das Almas Reserve encompasses 6,137 hectares of protected Caatinga biome terrain with elevations ranging from 290 to 750 meters above sea level.
The reserve originated from Herbert Fisk Johnson Jr.'s 1935 expedition to study carnauba palms, leading to its official establishment as a protected area in 2000.
The Samuel Johnson Ecological Center within the reserve functions as an educational facility where visitors learn about sustainable technologies and regional conservation methods.
Visitors need to schedule their visits four days in advance to access the seven ecological trails and accommodation facilities that house up to 36 people.
The reserve maintains four water springs and stores approximately 1,647,245 tons of CO2, contributing to regional water preservation and carbon storage.
