Serra das Almas Private Natural Heritage Reserve

Serra das Almas is a privately protected reserve covering approximately 6,137 hectares of Caatinga biome with terrain rising between 290 and 750 meters in elevation. The property includes seven ecological trails and lodging facilities that can accommodate up to 36 visitors.

The reserve traces its origins to Herbert Fisk Johnson Jr.'s 1935 expedition studying carnauba palms, which led to its official protection status in 2000. Decades of scientific interest in the region's botanical resources shaped the path toward formal conservation.

The Samuel Johnson Ecological Center serves as a learning space where visitors discover sustainable practices and regional conservation methods applied in this landscape. The facility reflects how local knowledge and modern techniques work together to protect the area.

Visitors need to schedule their trips at least four days in advance to secure access to the trails and facilities. Planning ahead ensures smooth coordination and confirms the availability of lodging and guided services.

The reserve contains four water springs that play a key role in the local water supply and storage system. These natural sources make it an important site for maintaining the region's water resources.
