Amarante, Municipality in Piauí, Brazil

Amarante is a small municipality in the state of Piauí, Brazil, situated along the Parnaíba River in the center-south part of the state. The town is also bordered by the Canindé and Mulato rivers, giving it a notable position in the interior of the region.

Amarante was officially founded in 1871, after the town's administration moved to the port of São Gonçalo do Amarante on the banks of the Parnaíba. Access to the river encouraged trade and helped connect the interior of Piauí to the coast.

The Escadaria Da Costa e Silva is a staircase decorated with paintings showing local poets, historical stories, and symbols tied to the region's economy. It leads up to a viewpoint from which you can see the whole town spread below.

Amarante is reached by road through the interior of Piauí, with main routes including the BR-316, BR-343, and the PI-130. Travelers coming from Teresina should plan for a drive of roughly two and a half hours.

Near Amarante lies Mimbó, one of the first recognized communities in Brazil founded by people who escaped slavery, with origins in caves along the riverbanks. This history is little known to most visitors, even though the site can be visited today.
