Pedra de Santo Antônio, Rock formation in Fagundes, Brazil.
Pedra de Santo Antônio is a granite rock formation located near the town of Fagundes, in the state of Paraíba, Brazil. The formation consists of large stacked boulders that rise above the surrounding dry scrubland and can be seen from a distance.
According to local accounts, escaped slaves found a statue of Saint Anthony in a crevice of the rocks during the 19th century, which gave the formation its name. The statue is said to have repeatedly returned to the rocks after being taken to the church in Fagundes.
The site is named after Saint Anthony, and a local tradition holds that walking under the rock three times will grant a wish. Many visitors take part in this custom, giving the place a sense of shared ritual that is still very much alive today.
The formation is reachable via BR-230, followed by a paved side road and a short walk to the site. Visiting in the early morning is a good idea, as the region has a dry and hot climate that can make a midday visit uncomfortable.
A large number of men in the surrounding municipality carry the name Antônio, which reflects how deeply the devotion to the saint has shaped everyday life there. This naming tradition goes well beyond religion and shows how a rock formation can become part of a community's identity.
