Castelão

Castelão is a football stadium in Fortaleza with natural grass and ranks among the largest sports venues in the country. The structure features multiple tiers of seating arranged around the pitch, along with sections for press and guests.

Construction began in the late 1960s on land previously acquired in the eastern part of the city. A major renovation ahead of the 2014 World Cup transformed its appearance and brought new standards for sustainability.

The venue takes its name from a former governor and continues to draw football fans from across the region today. On match days, surrounding streets fill with vendors selling jerseys and snacks, while the stands glow in the colors of the two city rivals.

Visitors reach the complex via Alberto Craveiro Avenue, where ample parking is available. For major matches, arriving early is advisable as the surrounding area becomes busy and entry points spread across several sections.

The structure became the first stadium in South America to receive international certification for environmentally friendly construction. The renovation integrated rainwater harvesting and solar panels that now supply part of the energy needs.
