Casa de Juvenal Galeno is a historic building in downtown Fortaleza with ten rooms containing books, personal items of the poet, and artworks from the 19th century. It features two auditoriums and a garden with large trees that provides space for performances.
The house was built in 1886 by Juvenal Galeno and converted into a cultural space in 1919 by his daughters Júlia and Henriqueta. During the 1930s and 1940s it became a gathering point for artists and writers who met there regularly.
The house was a meeting place for writers and artists from Ceará, where readings and discussions about regional literature took place. Visitors can still see traces of these cultural gatherings in the rooms, which preserve memories of poets like Rachel de Queiroz and Patativa do Assaré.
The house is located on Rua General Sampaio in downtown Fortaleza and is open daily to visitors. Guided tours allow you to explore the different rooms and collections, while regular cultural events and exhibitions take place throughout the year.
Juvenal Galeno corresponded with Machado de Assis, one of the greatest names in Brazilian literature, and helped found the first literary newspaper in Ceará state. These connections show how influential he was in the literary scene of his time.
