Teatro São José, Historical theatre in Central Fortaleza, Brazil
Teatro São José contains 530 seats with wooden interior decorations and stands as a cultural center in downtown Fortaleza near Cristo Redentor Square.
Dutch priest Guilherme Vaessen founded the theatre in 1915 to provide entertainment and social assistance for local workers who could not access other venues.
The venue regularly presents performances by local theatre groups and houses the Maracatu Museum, displaying regional cultural elements of Ceará.
The theatre features 420 seats in the main audience section and 110 additional spaces, with plastic chairs replacing the original wooden ones in 1994.
Before its official construction, the location operated in a zinc-covered warehouse where cinema sessions and theatrical plays raised funds for the main building.
