St. Joseph's Cathedral, Fortaleza, Gothic Revival cathedral in Center of Fortaleza, Brazil.
St. Joseph's Cathedral is a Gothic Revival church in downtown Fortaleza with two slender towers carved from white stone. The interior consists of a wide central nave with tall pointed arches, stained glass windows, and wooden pews arranged in long rows.
Construction started in the late 1930s under the direction of a French architect and took four decades to complete. The church was built to replace a smaller 18th-century chapel that previously stood on this site.
The bell tower rings several times daily during main service hours, marking traditional liturgical moments for worshippers across the city. Inside, religious imagery and statues are displayed, decorated especially during major feast days.
The church is open to visitors every day of the week, offering morning and afternoon access outside service hours. The main entrance faces a busy street and is easily reached by public transport from the historic center.
Beneath the main altar lies an underground crypt from the early 1960s with a small prayer room. This space is dedicated to young saints and also serves as a resting place for former church leaders of the region.
