Founded in March 1861 with 80 beds, this hospital emerged as the first medical center in Fortaleza to address the yellow fever epidemic.
The building represents a significant example of 19th-century institutional architecture in Ceará, recognized with COMPHIC Good Class designation.
The hospital maintains 403 beds, with 280 dedicated to public healthcare through the Brazilian Universal Health System (SUS), serving 8,000 patients monthly.
In 1925, the institution introduced the first X-ray machine in the region, marking a technological advancement in northeastern Brazilian healthcare.
