São Bento do Una, municipality of Pernambuco State, Brazil
São Bento do Una is a municipality in Pernambuco, Brazil, located near the rivers Una, Ipojuca, and Riachão. The city has simple buildings and is surrounded by green fields and farmland where chickens and livestock are raised.
The settlement began around 1830 as a farm owned by Antônio Alves de Soares and was later called Povoado de São Bento. In 1900 it earned city status, and in 1941 the name was changed to São Bento do Una to avoid confusion with other places.
The town takes its name from Saint Benedict, the patron saint against snake bites, as early residents prayed to him for protection from venomous snakes. Local crafts remain strong today, with colorful chicken figures carved from gourds sold in markets and workshops throughout the city.
The city is accessible by car via main roads that have been recently improved for easier access. Visitors should explore local markets in the morning when farmers and craftsmen are selling their goods.
The city is known as a center for poultry and egg production in northeastern Brazil and hosts the Corrida da Galinha festival every August. This festival with races, art displays, and contests draws visitors and showcases local pride in farming and craftsmanship.
