Silvermine Nature Reserve, Nature reserve in Western Cape, South Africa.
Silvermine Nature Reserve is a protected area on the Cape Peninsula in the Western Cape province of South Africa. A river runs through a rocky gorge and divides the terrain into two sections joined by a mountain pass.
A dam was built here in the late 1800s to supply water to the nearby city. From the early 1900s onward, the area became a popular destination for walkers and people seeking open land close to Cape Town.
The name of this reserve comes from the silvery shine of the river stones that once caught the eye of early visitors. Walkers along the streams today can still spot these pale, glistening pebbles in the water.
The area is best explored on foot, with trails that range from short walks to longer hikes of several hours. Starting early in the morning is a good idea, as the light is softer and the heat less intense.
The river running through the reserve is one of the very few on the Cape Peninsula that does not pass through any developed land. This makes it one of the rare places where a completely natural river system can still be observed.
