False Bay, Atlantic Ocean bay in Cape Peninsula, South Africa

False Bay is a crescent-shaped indentation on the southeastern side of the Cape Peninsula that opens to the ocean between two rocky headlands. The water here runs warmer than in the neighboring Table Bay due to currents flowing in from the Indian Ocean.

Portuguese explorers documented this bay in the 15th century and named it after confusing it with another location. It later became an important waypoint for ships traveling to distant spice-trading routes.

The name comes from early sailors who mistook it for the bay at the Cape of Good Hope. Today, fishing communities and boat traffic shape the waters and shores of this working waterfront.

You can see and reach the bay from several coastal points with beaches, walking paths, and overlooks along the shore. The best times to visit are on calmer days when the water is smooth enough for boating or spotting wildlife.

An island within the bay is known as a hunting ground for great white sharks that drive seals into shallow water. These dramatic encounters between predator and prey can be watched from boats and draw visitors interested in seeing nature unfold.
