Clifton, Coastal neighborhood in Cape Town, South Africa
Clifton is a coastal neighborhood in Cape Town with four sandy beaches spread along the Atlantic shoreline, separated by large granite boulder formations. The coves sit in a sheltered bay where each beach is progressively higher and more exposed as you move along the coast.
Following World War I, returning soldiers were granted land parcels between Second and Fourth beaches, establishing the area's distinctive small property sizes. This settlement shaped the neighborhood's compact development and remains visible in the layout today.
The beaches serve as gathering places where locals pursue water sports and families spend leisure time in different sections. Each cove attracts distinct groups depending on wave conditions and shelter from wind, shaping how people use the shoreline throughout the day.
The ocean stays cold year-round and works best for surfing and swimming with a wetsuit. First Beach has the strongest waves for experienced surfers, while the other coves offer calmer waters and easier access for families.
The sand here shifts seasonally, creating surprisingly wider shorelines in late summer months. Winter erosion cycles temporarily narrow the beaches, a natural pattern that reveals how the coast constantly reshapes itself.
