The region experienced conflict between German colonial forces and the Witbooi Khoikhoi people in 1894. Remnants of these battles including graves, trenches, and gun positions remain visible near the current campsite.
The mountains have been home to hunter-gatherers for thousands of years, with rock paintings and stone tools still visible in various locations showing how people lived and hunted here. These marks reflect the long connection between humans and this landscape.
The park is a dry mountain environment where bringing adequate water supplies is essential for any visit. The campsite has basic amenities but no electricity or internet, so plan to be self-sufficient during your stay.
The mountains contain tufa deposits created by calcium-rich water filtering through dolomite rock, a rare geological feature. These formations show evidence of much wetter climate periods in the past.
