Tygerberg Nature Reserve

Tygerberg Nature Reserve is a protected area spanning 300 hectares of hills in northern Cape Town. Five hundred plant species grow here, and one hundred bird species make this place their home.

The hills received their name in 1657 as Luipaerts Berghen, meaning Leopard's Mountain, because of the spotted appearance of the terrain. The area was later protected to preserve its natural landscape.

The on-site visitor center displays rotating exhibits about the region's wildlife and plants. Guests can learn about local biodiversity and its importance to the area.

The reserve has 13 kilometers of marked trails starting from the Welgemoed entrance and running throughout the protected area. Bring proper footwear, as paths go uphill and can be tiring in sunny weather.

Three plant species exist only within this reserve's boundaries and grow nowhere else in the world. These rare plants are crucial for preserving the Swartland Shale Renosterveld vegetation.
