Salt River, Cape Town Community House

Salt River Community House is a social activism center where approximately two dozen organizations work from shared offices. These groups focus on labor research, education, gender advocacy, HIV/AIDS education, environmental work, and youth development programs.

The Western Province Council of Churches converted a former auto workshop into this center in 1987 to serve as a gathering point for unions during apartheid. Just days after opening, security forces bombed the building, but operations resumed and it became a crucial hub for resistance.

The walls display large murals documenting labor movements and activists who fought for justice during apartheid through demonstrations and organizing. These painted stories remain visible reminders of how communities used this space to push for change.

The center is located on Salt River Road and opens weekdays with different hours on weekends. Check ahead about visiting options since some areas may require advance booking or invitation from resident organizations.

A bomb attack struck the building just eight days after it opened, targeting its role as a resistance hub during apartheid. The fact that it was immediately repaired and continued operating makes it a powerful symbol of persistence.
