Greek Orthodox Cathedral of St George

The Greek Orthodox Cathedral of St George is a church building in Woodstock featuring neoclassical design with a light blue dome. The interior ceiling is decorated with stars, while stained glass windows filter morning light into the main prayer space.

The cathedral was founded in 1904 as the first Greek Orthodox church in Africa. It received cathedral status in 1968 under the Patriarchate of Alexandria.

Inside, Byzantine frescoes painted by a Romanian priest cover the walls with religious imagery and stories. These artworks from the 1990s give the space its current spiritual character and visual richness.

The building sits on Mountain Road in Woodstock and is straightforward to locate. Visitors can attend regular services held according to Eastern Orthodox traditions with traditional chanting and ceremonial vestments.

A nativity scene in the main hall and specific Jesus imagery in the sanctuary are lit by morning light streaming through stained glass. This interplay of colored light and religious images creates a special impression during early hours.
