Fugard Theatre, Theatre venue in District Six, Cape Town, South Africa
The Fugard Theatre was a performance space in Cape Town's District Six, housed within a converted neo-Gothic church hall and two former warehouse buildings. The facility contained two separate performance areas with different capacities to accommodate various types of productions.
The venue opened in 2010 and was named after South African playwright Athol Fugard to honor his contributions to theatre. Operations concluded in 2021, after which the space was repurposed for other community uses.
The venue hosted 180 productions, including plays, musicals, operas, and film screenings, welcoming 1.5 million visitors during its decade of operation.
The space featured two rooms of different sizes suited for various event types and audience capacities. The location was easily accessible and the surrounding area provided the necessary amenities for visitors.
After its closure, the space was taken over by the adjacent District Six Museum and now serves as a Homecoming Centre. This new program focuses on the history and heritage of the neighborhood's displaced community.
