Garden Route Botanical Garden, Botanical garden in George, South Africa.
The Garden Route Botanical Garden is a 19-hectare space at the base of the Outeniqua Mountains displaying the plant diversity of the Southern Cape region. Well-marked pathways guide visitors through different plant collections and natural habitats found in the area.
Members of the Botanical Society established the garden in 1992 and opened it to the public in 1998 to showcase native plants. The site emerged as a response to growing interest in regional plant conservation and environmental education.
The space functions as a learning center where visitors discover the region's native plants and their conservation through educational programs and displays. The gardens show how local ecology works in practice.
The gardens are open Monday to Friday from 10:00 to 14:00, with clearly marked paths for easy exploration. Wear comfortable shoes and allow time for wandering, as the setting invites leisurely strolls through different areas.
The space houses around 600 plant species and serves as a refuge for hundreds of butterfly and bird species found nowhere else concentrated together. Visitors may encounter damselflies and frogs throughout the grounds, creating unexpected wildlife encounters.
