Muir College, Historical boys school in Kariega, South Africa.
Muir College is a boys school occupying a campus in Vanes Estate with multiple buildings and extensive sports grounds. The institution teaches students from Grade 4 through Grade 12 and provides on-site housing for around 100 boarders.
The school was founded in 1822 as the first government school in Uitenhage, operating as a free institution under Scottish educator James Rose Innes. It took the name Muir College in 1907.
The school badge brings together Scotland's lion, a Xhosa warrior, and an anchor, symbols that reflect the institution's mixed heritage and local connections. These elements tell a story about the place where different cultures have come together over time.
The campus is well laid out with clear pathways connecting the main buildings and sports facilities. Visitors should check in at the main office first to get oriented and learn about available areas to see.
The school has produced two Springbok rugby players, Fred Smollan and Garth Wright, who played at the national level. It also educated the respected Afrikaans poet A.D. Keet.
