OR Tambo District Municipality

The OR Tambo District Municipality covers 12,141 square kilometers of land, encompassing five local municipalities with Mthatha serving as its administrative center.

Established in December 2000, this administrative region incorporates territories that were formerly part of the Transkei homeland during South Africa's apartheid period.

The district maintains strong Xhosa traditions, with 94 percent of its 1.3 million residents communicating primarily in the isiXhosa language.

The municipality provides essential services across numerous towns including Flagstaff, Libode, Lusikisiki, Mqanduli, Ngqeleni, Qumbu, and Tsolo.

Located at an elevation of 811 meters, the district extends to the Wild Coast Region, combining inland territories with coastal areas along the Indian Ocean.
