Benoni, Town in the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality in Gauteng, South Africa
Benoni is a city in eastern Gauteng, South Africa, forming part of the greater Johannesburg area. It features tree-lined residential neighborhoods, several lakes, and shopping centers like Lakeside Mall, while attractions such as Bunny Park and Willowmoore Cricket Stadium offer diverse activities for visitors.
Gold was discovered in the area around the 1880s, attracting prospectors and leading to the first registered mine in 1887. The town gained official status as a municipality in 1906 and later played a significant role during the 1922 Rand Revolt and World War II, when the aerodrome trained South African Air Force pilots.
Benoni takes its name from a biblical story where Rachel named her son, meaning 'son of my sorrow.' The surveyor Johan Rissik chose this name for the land, and it reflects a connection to heritage that residents and visitors still recognize today.
The city offers several accommodation options in quiet, safe neighborhoods and is well accessible by road. Visitors can explore parks, lakes for fishing and boating, golf courses, and various museums, which you can easily discover in good weather.
The city is affectionately called the City of Lakes because of its multiple bodies of water. The town layout was designed by Sir George Farrar, who named many streets after places and people from Bedford, England, creating a lasting reminder of his English home.
