Marievale Bird Sanctuary, Bird sanctuary in Gauteng Province, South Africa
The protected wetland spans 10 square kilometers of floodplains with two lakes, hosting over 280 bird and mammal species throughout the year.
Established in 1978 with 524 hectares, the sanctuary expanded to 1,526 hectares under management of the Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs.
The Blesbokspruit wetland within the sanctuary maintains international recognition as a RAMSAR site for conservation and sustainable wetland management.
Four specialized bird watching hides named Flamingo, Hadeda, Duiker, and Shelduck provide observation points for visitors from 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM daily.
During summer months, the sanctuary attracts up to 3,500 birds including Goliath herons, Black egrets, and Ethiopian snipes to its water bodies.
