Mbabane is the executive capital in Hhohho District, Eswatini, located where two river valleys meet in the mountains. The town spreads across several hills with residential and commercial areas connected by winding roads.
The British colonial administration chose this location as the seat of protectorate government in 1902 because it sat on an important trading route. After independence in 1968, the town remained the seat of government for the new kingdom.
The Swazi Market Plaza displays traditional crafts and textiles made by local artisans using techniques passed down through generations. Visitors watch basket weavers and see painted pottery decorated with patterns that reflect the kingdom's heritage.
Most shops and offices are located along Allister Miller Street and Gwamile Street in the town center. Minibuses run regularly to residential areas on the surrounding hills and connect the different neighborhoods.
The name comes from a local chief who lived in this area during the 19th century and whose homestead stood here. The town grew around this original settlement as traders and travelers used the location as a stopping point.
