Phophonyane Falls Nature Reserve

Phophonyane Falls Nature Reserve is a protected forest area near Piggs Peak featuring a major waterfall and dense subtropical woodland. The reserve includes numerous walking trails, multiple accommodation options, and is home to a wide variety of bird species found throughout the region.

The reserve sits on gneiss rock formations approximately 3.55 billion years old, representing some of Earth's oldest geological structures. These ancient rocks shaped the landscape and the development of the waterfall system that now forms the centerpiece of the protected area.

The name derives from Siswati language and refers to 'place of sources'. People come here to understand how forest ecosystems function and how local communities have historically managed these lands.

The reserve is accessible via several marked hiking trails suitable for different fitness levels. It is best to arrive early in the morning to enjoy the best lighting and avoid crowds.

The Phophonyane River creates a series of waterfalls and natural pools spread across the landscape. These water pools offer refreshing swimming opportunities that many visitors discover unexpectedly during their walks.
