Haut-Lomami

Haut-Lomami is an administrative province in southeast Democratic Republic of the Congo covering approximately 108,000 square kilometers. The region comprises five territories—Bukama, Kabongo, Kamina, Kaniama, and Malemba-Nkulu—each with distinct local characteristics and communities.

The province was created in 2015 following the division of the former Katanga province into multiple administrative units. This reorganization reshaped the regional structure and established new territorial boundaries that remain today.

French serves as the official language, while Swahili holds national importance and Kiluba shapes everyday communication among residents. This linguistic variety reflects the region's connections to different cultural traditions.

The province is divided into five distinct administrative areas to explore and navigate across its territories. The region is home to several million residents, making it necessary to plan travel carefully depending on which area you wish to visit.

The name comes from the Lomami River, a geographical feature that shapes the landscape and gives the region its identity. Kamina was chosen as the capital and serves as the administrative center for the entire province.
