Kikwete Bridge, Steel bridge across Malagarasi River in Uvinza, Tanzania
Kikwete Bridge is a steel structure with seven concrete spans stretching 275 meters across the Malagarasi River with two traffic lanes. It carries the B8 road and improves vehicle movement across one of Tanzania's major rivers in the western part of the country.
Construction started in 2010 under South Korean firm Hanil Engineering and Construction Company and finished in 2015. The project replaced an older crossing and significantly improved transportation links between western regions.
The bridge carries the name of President Jakaya Kikwete, who opened the structure and marked its importance for the region. This naming reflects how major infrastructure projects become tied to the leaders who oversee them.
The crossing is accessible to both vehicles and pedestrians and links western areas of the country via a major road. Visitors should expect local road conditions and traffic patterns typical of a primary transportation route.
The design uses materials and engineering techniques developed by South Korean specialists, showing how international collaboration shapes local infrastructure. This project demonstrates how global expertise solves regional transportation challenges.
