Rukwa Region, Administrative region in southwestern Tanzania.
Rukwa Region is an area in southwestern Tanzania situated between Lake Tanganyika and Lake Rukwa, featuring mountains, valleys, and agricultural areas. The landscape varies from higher elevations to flatter zones, creating different environments across the territory.
The region was created in 1975 when two districts from neighboring administrative areas were combined into a single unit. This administrative reorganization brought together different populations and lands under one authority.
The Fipa, Nyiha, Lyangalile, Mambwe, and Lungu ethnic groups shape everyday life through their crafts, music, and community celebrations. You can see these traditions practiced in villages and at local markets throughout the region.
Getting around relies on a mix of road connections and water routes across the lakes linking different settlements. Allow extra time for travel since conditions can change depending on the season.
The lakes here contain water that has persisted for many thousands of years, creating special conditions for fishing and aquatic life. This ancient water supports a particular diversity of aquatic species and shapes traditional fishing methods.
