Muyinga Province, province of Burundi
Muyinga is an administrative region in northeastern Burundi that extends along the borders with Tanzania and Rwanda. The area comprises several districts with mixed landscapes, from open grasslands to greener zones, where markets and settlements form the backbone of daily life.
Muyinga was historically one of Burundi's major regions with its own local government administration. In 2025, the region was integrated into the newly created Buhumuza Province, marking a significant change in the country's administrative structure.
The name Muyinga comes from local languages and carries meaning rooted in the region's heritage. It serves as a gathering place where markets, community events, and daily interactions shape the social fabric, revealing how people maintain strong connections and pass traditions through generations.
The best time to visit is during the dry season from June to September, when weather is more stable and outdoor activities are more comfortable. During the rainy season the landscape turns greener, but roads become harder to travel and paths can be muddy or flooded.
Since 1998, SOS Children's Villages has worked in this region supporting over 1,300 adults and children through kindergartens, school programs, and care homes. This work reveals how international organizations shape daily life for many families and help them navigate challenges.
