Quatre Bornes, human settlement
Quatre Bornes is a city in the Plaines Wilhems region of Mauritius with many shops and busy streets. It is known for markets held on Thursdays and Sundays where textiles, fabrics, and fresh produce are sold.
The city began in the early 1700s when a Prussian named Wilhem Leicknig settled there in 1721. Development accelerated when the British built a railway through the region in 1864, attracting more people.
The name comes from local Creole and means the City of Flowers. Walking through the streets, you notice flowers and plants that give the place a fresh and colorful feel.
The best time to visit is during April, May, June, September, October, and November when the weather is mild. Most visitors find it easy to explore on foot, though renting a car helps reach nearby beaches and nature reserves.
The city was officially recognized as a village in 1890 and became a town four years later, showing how quickly it grew. The Orchard Centre, one of the largest shopping centers on the island, shows the modern development that happened in recent decades.
