Stanley Hotel, Nairobi, hotel in Nairobi, Kenya
The Sarova Stanley Hotel is a hotel building in downtown Nairobi at the corner of Kenyatta Avenue and Kimathi Street. The building displays Victorian architecture with dark woodwork in maroon and gold tones, over 200 rooms, multiple restaurants and bars, a heated rooftop pool, and a fitness center.
The hotel opened in 1902 when Nairobi was still a railway stop and was the city's first luxury accommodation. The original wooden building was demolished in the late 1950s and replaced with a new structure, while the Sarova Group acquired the hotel in 1978 and has maintained it since.
The hotel is named after Sir Henry Morton Stanley, a Welsh explorer known for his African expeditions. This name connects the building to stories of adventure and discovery that shaped how people understood the continent.
The hotel is centrally located in the city, making it easy to reach markets, parks, and other Nairobi attractions. Staff can arrange airport transfers and tours to nearby sites like Nairobi National Park.
The Exchange Bar is said to be where Nairobi's first stock exchange was located, where visitors can enjoy a drink and learn about the city's business history. The Thorn Tree Café with its large thorn tree in the center is a gathering spot where travelers once left messages for each other, like an early postal service.
