Dandora is a residential suburb in eastern Nairobi, divided into five development phases that give the area a grid-like layout of streets and housing blocks. The neighborhood borders one of the largest municipal landfills in the region, which sits on its eastern side and strongly shapes its surroundings.
The area was founded in 1977 with World Bank funding as part of a planned housing scheme to address Nairobi's rapid urban growth. Over the following decades, it expanded well beyond its original boundaries and became home to a wide mix of people from across Kenya.
Dandora is widely known as the birthplace of Kenyan hip-hop, with artists from the area shaping a music scene that spread well beyond Nairobi. Murals, street art, and informal performance spaces still reflect this creative energy throughout the neighborhood.
The neighborhood is best explored on foot, as the street layout follows a fairly regular grid that makes orientation straightforward. Going with someone who knows the area is helpful, especially when moving between the different development phases.
