Kenya Crude Oil Pipeline, Oil pipeline infrastructure in Lokichar-Lamu region, Kenya
The Kenya Crude Oil Pipeline is an oil transport line that moves crude from the South Lokichar Basin oil fields to the port city of Lamu on the Indian Ocean. The infrastructure was developed to efficiently move oil from inland production areas to the coast for export operations.
The project emerged from earlier proposals for connecting neighboring Uganda's oil to Kenya's coast and involved route studies conducted during the 2010s. This development represented an important step in moving Kenya's oil resources directly to the sea.
The Kenya Pipeline Company maintains connections with local communities through food donations and supports athletic achievements through their professional volleyball team.
The line runs from Lokichar in the north to the port of Lamu in the south, crossing varied landscapes and terrain types. Access to active pipeline sections is restricted and local permissions are needed if you want to visit the affected areas.
The pipeline integrates with a new fiber optic network between Mombasa and Nairobi, delivering internet speeds of 1.6 TeraBits per second along its route.
