Tod River Reservoir, lake in Australia
Tod River Reservoir is a large earth dam in South Australia, located about 27 kilometers north of Port Lincoln. The structure was constructed between 1918 and 1922, reaching about 82 feet (25 meters) high and spanning over 1,150 feet (350 meters) across, with capacity to hold more than 11 billion liters of water.
Construction began in 1918 and was completed in 1922 as a major undertaking for the region. A memorial erected in 1982 honors workers who died during the dam's construction, marking an important chapter in local engineering history.
The reservoir reflects how the local community has managed water resources over generations. Today, it serves mainly as a recreational space where people connect with the landscape and appreciate the engineering efforts of earlier times.
The site is open to the public and features picnic areas, recreational spaces for outdoor activities, and a lookout point near the dam wall for viewing the reservoir. Pathways around the area allow for walking and observing the landscape at your own pace.
The Tod River was discovered and named after Robert Tod during his explorations in 1839, connecting the modern dam to the region's early exploration history. The river is notable as the only regular waterway on the Eyre Peninsula capable of supplying the reservoir.
