Fort van der Capellen

The fort features thick stone walls measuring 75 centimeters, complete with defensive trenches and ramparts overlooking the surrounding Batusangkar landscape.

Built between 1822 and 1826, Fort van der Capellen served as a Dutch military base during conflicts between traditional Adat groups and religious Padri movements.

The fort represents the intersection of Dutch colonial architecture with Indonesian building techniques, incorporating local materials and construction methods.

Visitors can access the fort's preserved military structures, including barracks, ammunition storage areas, and observation posts from different periods of occupation.

The fort changed functions multiple times, from military base to educational institution, housing the State University of Padang until 1955.
