Walyunga National Park, Nature reserve in City of Swan, Australia
Walyunga National Park is a nature reserve covering about 1,800 hectares within a steeply sided valley in the Darling Range, located northeast of Perth. The landscape features granite outcrops and hills, with the Swan-Avon River cutting through and creating rapids as it flows.
The area was officially established as a protected park in 1970, recognizing its natural value after years of local awareness. The geological formations present were shaped over millions of years and represent the ancient story of this region.
This valley served as a major gathering place for Noongar people for thousands of years, shaping how the land was used and understood. Visitors walking through can sense this long connection to the land when they explore the different areas within the park.
The park has multiple marked walking trails of varying lengths and picnic areas with barbecue facilities available. Visitors should wear sturdy shoes and bring plenty of water, as the trails traverse hilly terrain and can be uneven.
The annual Avon Descent, a multi-day river race, takes place on the Swan-Avon River flowing through the park, attracting paddlers and rowers from across the region. This event has made the location well-known among water sports enthusiasts.
