Oodnadatta, Remote administrative division in Pastoral Unincorporated Area, South Australia
Oodnadatta is an administrative region in the remote interior of South Australia covering approximately 624,000 square kilometers. The area contains several widely scattered communities managed by the Outback Communities Authority.
The region received its current administrative structure in 2009 when the Outback Communities Authority replaced the earlier Outback Areas Community Development Trust. This change modernized how the scattered communities were managed and coordinated.
The area is home to the Wangkangurru and Yawarrawarrka peoples, whose languages and knowledge continue in the communities today. Visitors can experience these cultural connections through local interactions and how people relate to the land.
The region is highly isolated and requires careful planning before visiting, as services and supplies are limited throughout the area. Travelers should bring adequate provisions and account for the vast distances between communities.
The governance structure includes local residents to ensure decisions reflect the needs of these remote communities. At least four of the seven board members must come from the communities themselves.
