Museum of Transport, Transportation museum in Taman Mini Indonesia Indah, Jakarta, Indonesia
The Museum of Transport is a transport museum located within the Taman Mini Indonesia Indah park in Jakarta, with sections covering land, sea, and air travel as well as traditional Indonesian methods of transport. The collection is spread across indoor halls and a large outdoor area where full-size aircraft, trains, and ships are on display.
The museum opened in 1991 after around six years of planning and construction, with the goal of documenting how transport developed across Indonesia. It was built as part of a broader effort to bring Indonesia's cultural and technological history to a wide audience.
The museum displays traditional transport methods from different parts of Indonesia, from simple wooden boats to animal-drawn vehicles once used on specific islands. These objects show how people across such a spread-out archipelago developed very different ways of moving goods and people.
The site covers a large area, so comfortable shoes and enough time are important if you want to explore both the indoor and outdoor sections. Starting with one of the main covered halls and moving outward is a good way to organize your visit.
The outdoor area includes retired full-size aircraft that visitors can approach closely, something rarely possible in indoor settings. Standing next to one of these planes gives a sense of their actual scale that no model or photograph can fully convey.
