Taman Mini Indonesia Indah, Cultural theme park in East Jakarta, Indonesia
Taman Mini Indonesia Indah is a theme park covering 147 hectares (363 acres) in East Jakarta that represents the cultural and geographic diversity of Indonesia. Regional pavilions, a scale model archipelago set in a large lake, cable cars, and multiple entertainment facilities form the grounds.
First Lady Siti Hartinah began planning the park in 1970 to strengthen national awareness and showcase the diversity of the archipelago. The official opening took place on April 20, 1975.
Each pavilion reflects the architecture and traditions of one of the 33 provinces, allowing visitors to walk through different regions of the country without leaving Jakarta. Performances and workshops on-site show traditional dances, crafts, and regional clothing still worn in many villages today.
Visitors move around the grounds using electric microbuses, bicycles, or scooters, as private vehicles are not allowed inside the park. Paths between pavilions can be long, so comfortable footwear is advisable.
The aquarium ranks among Asia's largest freshwater facilities and displays species from the rivers and lakes of the archipelago. Seventeen specialized museums cover topics from technology to folk art and offer surprisingly detailed insights into Indonesian history and culture.
