Cilincing, Administrative district in North Jakarta, Indonesia
Cilincing is a district in North Jakarta that spans seven administrative villages including Marunda and Kalibaru, located along the northern coast. The area contains both residential and industrial sectors connected by waterways and transportation networks throughout.
The district developed during the 18th century as Batavia expanded, with Dutch administrators building structures and canal networks to support trade. These early foundations connected the area to the city's commercial network and influenced its growth over time.
The name comes from the Sundanese language, where 'Ci' means river and 'Lincing' refers to the carambola fruit that once grew along local waterways. This linguistic roots shows how the community was historically connected to the natural resources that shaped everyday life.
The area is accessible by multiple bus routes connecting to different parts of Jakarta, making it easy to reach from the city center. Morning and late afternoon visits offer calmer conditions for exploring the district's streets and neighborhoods.
Since 2012 the Marunda Dam project transformed large land areas into zones for flood control, waste management, and public recreation spaces. This major undertaking reshaped the district and created new functions for previously low-lying land that faced regular water challenges.
