Airlangga University, Public university in Mulyorejo, Surabaya, Indonesia
Airlangga University is a public institution in Mulyorejo, Surabaya, with sixteen faculties distributed across several sites in Dharmahusada, Dharmawangsa, MERR, and Giri Banyuwangi. The complex also includes teaching hospitals that serve the medical, veterinary, nursing, and dental programs.
The institution was founded in 1948 as a branch of the University of Indonesia and received official recognition as an independent establishment in 1954. Over the following decades, it expanded its offerings and sites to meet the growing educational demand in East Java.
The name honors a Javanese ruler from the early eleventh century whose reign is still remembered as a time of learning. Across the sprawling campus, modern buildings alternate with older structures where students from across Indonesia come together.
The different sites require some orientation, as each faculty may be housed on separate grounds. Visitors to the medical facilities should know that they also serve as working hospitals for the public and can be quite busy.
The coat of arms shows a bird carrying a vessel with mythical water, symbolizing the endless cycle of knowledge. This mythological reference appears on official documents and links the institution to ancient Indonesian traditions.
