Waduk Manggar, reservoir in Indonesia
Waduk Manggar is a dam and reservoir located in northern Balikpapan, East Kalimantan, built to store and supply water for the city's residents. It covers approximately 127 hectares with a catchment area of around 50 square kilometers and holds a capacity of over 16 million cubic meters of water.
Construction of the dam began in 1978 and was completed in 1980 to provide clean water to Balikpapan residents. From 2004 to 2010, a new dam was built to significantly increase storage capacity and ensure the city's water supply for future growth.
The reservoir serves as a vital resource that shapes daily life for residents who depend on its water supply for drinking, cooking, and cleaning. It also functions as a gathering place where people come to spend time outdoors with family and enjoy the landscape.
The reservoir is located in the northern part of Balikpapan and is accessible for visitors who wish to explore the open space and water area. The best time to visit is during or after the rainy season when water levels are higher and the surrounding vegetation appears more lush.
The area surrounding the reservoir serves as a habitat for various bird species including snakebirds, blue-throated bee-eaters, and Brahminy kites. This bird population demonstrates that natural wildlife persists in the region despite the presence of urban infrastructure nearby.
