Johnstone Court

Johnstone Court is a shopping arcade in Terang, Victoria, arranged with multiple retail spaces surrounding a central courtyard. The brick building features lead-light windows, a glazed barrel vault ceiling, and mosaic tilework spelling out the name at the entrance.

Winifred Lilian Johnstone commissioned architect Warburton Perry Knights to design this shopping arcade in 1925 following a fire that destroyed her previous building. The complex was built during the 1920s and now appears on the Victorian Heritage Register.

The arcade served as a gathering place where local people ran daily errands and encountered their neighbors. The mix of shops reflects what residents valued and needed during that period.

The arcade is located along High Street with shops accessible from both the street frontage and the internal courtyard, making navigation straightforward. Visitors can enter from the sidewalk or through the central courtyard entrance.

The arcade retains its original shop fronts and decorative detailing from the 1920s, making it a rare example of how retail was designed during that era. These early features reveal what customers would have experienced when shopping in that period.
