Kanawinka Geopark, Geological exploration site in Victoria, Australia
Kanawinka Geopark is a geological exploration site spanning southwestern Victoria with volcanic plains and limestone caves. The landscape displays different rock formations and natural structures created by ancient geological processes.
Geological formations developed when Australia separated from Gondwana, marking a long period of change. Volcanic activity shaped the region over millions of years and created the landscapes visible today.
The name Kanawinka comes from the Buandik Aboriginal people and means Land of Tomorrow. It reflects their long connection to this territory, which remains central to their identity and relationship with the land.
The eastern section lies about one hour from Melbourne by car, while the western area requires several more hours to reach. Plan visits during drier months when trails and caves are easier to access.
The region contains hundreds of volcanic openings scattered across the landscape. These many eruption points make it a rare example of volcanic diversity at this scale.
