Chinaman's Hat, Navigational aid in Port Phillip, Victoria, Australia
The octagonal structure of Chinaman's Hat stands in the South Channel of Port Phillip Bay, serving as a shipping channel marker for maritime navigation.
Following World War II, this navigation structure replaced a military installation known as Station M, which had been part of Port Phillip's defense system.
The structure received its name due to its resemblance to traditional Asian conical hats, becoming a recognized reference point in local maritime traditions.
Located at coordinates -38.2864 latitude and 144.724 longitude, the structure guides vessels through the waters while providing a resting platform for seals.
Parks Victoria invested 210,000 Australian dollars in 2002 to construct a new platform specifically designed to accommodate the local seal population.
