Barwon Heads Bridge, Heritage footbridge and beam bridge in Barwon Heads, Australia.
Barwon Heads Bridge is a combined pedestrian and vehicle crossing spanning 308.5 meters across the Barwon River, joining the coastal townships of Barwon Heads and Ocean Grove. The structure features a 9-meter-wide road section capable of supporting vehicles up to 44 tonnes and a separate 4.5-meter-wide pedestrian pathway positioned downstream.
A timber bridge first crossed the river here in 1927, serving the communities for generations before being replaced in 2010. The new structure maintains visual and functional connections to its predecessor while meeting contemporary engineering standards.
The bridge sits on lands of the Waddawurrung Balug clan, where the river meets the ocean at Point Flinders. It serves as a vital link between two coastal communities and shapes how locals and visitors experience the landscape.
The bridge is accessible daily from both sides and offers clear paths for walking and driving across the river. During rough weather, water levels can rise and affect conditions, so it is wise to check local updates before planning your visit.
The bridge rests on 185 treated timber piles arranged across 34 spans, merging modern engineering with time-tested building methods. This combination gives the structure both contemporary performance and a design that honours traditional approaches.
