Glen Iris, Residential suburb in eastern Melbourne, Australia.
Glen Iris is a residential suburb in eastern Melbourne that spreads across tree-lined streets with large homes and gardens throughout. The area sits about 10 kilometers from the city center and is dotted with parks that give the neighborhood its green character.
The name dates to 1852 when Captain Thomas Henderson named a property near Gardiners Creek after the ship Iris that brought him to the area. This naming established the identity of the place in its early settlement days.
The suburb contains multiple educational institutions, including Camberwell South Primary School, Glen Iris Primary School, and Korowa Anglican Girls' School.
The suburb is served by two train stations on the Glen Waverley railway line for easy transport. The Alamein line also passes through the eastern part of the area for additional connectivity.
Glen Iris maintained its position as Melbourne's geographical center of population from the 1990s until the 2020s before shifting toward Camberwell.
