Karkarook Park, Metropolitan park with artificial lake in Heatherton, Melbourne, Australia
Karkarook Park is a metropolitan park featuring a 15-hectare artificial lake surrounded by walking trails, woodlands, and wetland areas. These habitats support a wide range of wildlife and plants that have become established over many years.
The site was a sand mining pit between 1997 and 2001 before transforming into a lake fed by groundwater. This conversion replaced former market gardens and created a new space for nature and recreation.
The name Karkarook comes from the Kulin languages of the Bunurong people and relates to the sandy character of their ancestral lands. This naming reflects the deep connection between the place and its original inhabitants.
The area offers about 6 kilometers of walking trails, electric barbecue facilities, and designated fishing spots along the lake. Visitors can also launch non-powered boats on the water and explore the full grounds at their own pace.
The lake draws more than 145 bird species and hosts around 90 types of native waterfowl. This remarkable concentration of water birds makes it an unexpected spot for birders passing through the area.
