Federation Bells, Musical installation in Birrarung Marr, Melbourne, Australia
Federation Bells is a sound installation featuring 39 bronze bells mounted on poles spread across the middle terrace of Birrarung Marr. The bells are tuned to different pitches and programmed to play various melodic sequences throughout the day.
Victoria State Government commissioned Federation Bells in 1998 to mark the centenary of Australian Federation, with construction completed in 2002. The project emerged from a desire to create a memorial that would symbolize Australia's unification.
Musicians and composers worldwide submit original compositions through an online platform, and their pieces are performed daily as part of the installation's rotating schedule.
The installation is freely accessible through the riverside parkland, and the bells perform at regular times in the morning, midday, and late afternoon. Plan your visit around these performance times to experience the full sound display.
Each of the 39 bells was engineered using aerospace techniques and computational modeling to achieve precise vibration patterns and specific acoustic properties. This technical precision makes the installation a rare example of engineering science applied to sound art.
