Yarra Park, Urban park in East Melbourne, Australia
Yarra Park is a 35-hectare (86-acre) green space with tree-lined paths connecting Punt Road and Swan Street through the Melbourne Sports and Entertainment Precinct. The park provides access to sporting venues and connects to the Yarra River Trail.
Victorian Governor Charles La Trobe established this parkland in 1856, initially designating 81 hectares from Punt Road to Swanston Street for public use. The principle of public access has been maintained since its creation.
The park contains ancient eucalyptus trees with markings from the Wurundjeri people of the Kulin nation, who harvested bark for canoe construction.
Three footbridges enable pedestrians and cyclists to cross railway lines and reach different sporting venues easily. The well-marked paths are straightforward to navigate throughout the day.
Statues of renowned Australian sports figures stand around the Melbourne Cricket Ground, including footballers Ron Barassi and Dick Reynolds and cricketer Donald Bradman. These monuments honor athletes who shaped Australian sports culture.
